Reversing Summer Skin Damage

Reversing Summer Skin Damage

If you’re seeing signs of autumn on the horizon, you’re not alone. Depending on where you live, leaves may have already started their transformation from lush green to golden oranges, yellows, reds, and browns. In fact, as you read this article, you may even be enjoying a pumpkin spice latte while you are wrapped in a jewel-toned sweater.

If you’re like me, you spent as much time as possible outside this summer (fresh air in a pandemic is even more of a beautiful thing!). Paddleboarding and kayaking on the lake, sipping iced coffee on the back deck, and taking a quick dip in the neighborhood pool were a few of my favorite things to do. While it felt good when the warm sun hit my face, I know it wasn’t good for my skin. So, as you’re packing up your swimsuits and waving to your kids on the school bus, take a moment to rejuvenate your skin and help it recover from summer damage. Here’s how:

1. Sweep away dead skin cells.

In other words, it’s time to get out that exfoliator and brush off the dead skin cells of summer. According to Healthline, your skin naturally sheds cells every 30 days. However, it doesn’t always shed every cell, and the result can be dry, scratchy patches of skin or clogged pores. Instead of waiting around and hoping for the best, take the easy step of applying an exfoliator to your face. You can even make it part of your nightly routine if it’s gentle. If it’s a stronger exfoliant, a few times per week should do the job.

When you exfoliate, your skin will look brighter thanks to those healthy, younger cells you’ve uncovered, and you’ll be set up for the second step in your routine: prepping your skin to absorb moisturizer. One more bonus? Healthline says “long-term exfoliating can increase collagen production. Collagen is key to glowing, vibrant skin. The protein also promotes skin elasticity, minimizing the appearance of fine lines and related sagging.” That’s it—I’m sold.

2. Swap out your light moisturizer for something heavier.

Ah, the dog days of summer—when you can slather on a tinted moisturizer with sunscreen and hit the beach. Now that the weather is cooling and drying out like the leaves, it’s time to up your moisturizer game. If it was a simple, clean lotion before, perhaps it’s time to swap in a richer, thicker night cream. Not sure where to start? This article in Cosmopolitan gathered some of the best clean, green creams, from brands like Farmacy and Youth to the People.

3. Address fine lines that may have cropped up.

Remember how you spent some time in the sun this summer (hopefully) with sunscreen slathered on every 2 hours? Well, that same beautiful, bright orb can also cause fine lines and wrinkles on your face due to excessive UV exposure. To smooth your skin and help it look wrinkle-free, add Furlesse patches into your routine, if you haven’t already. They’re so easy to use: You can put them on your clean face in the morning while you scroll your social accounts, in the evening before a late dinner, or at bedtime and keep them on until morning. Furlesse patches are non-invasive, hypoallergenic, and easy to use. They’re as simple as they sound!
